Patios and Pool Decks Built for Full Sun
Patio & pool deck resurfacing in San Antonio is a different job from coating a garage. Outdoor slabs sit in direct sun for long stretches. July and August average highs of about 95 to 96 degrees, and Wikipedia's climate table shows those months getting about 72% of possible sunshine. Bare feet, wet surfaces, pool chemicals, heavy spring and fall rains and the occasional freeze all hit the same slab. A good pool deck resurfacing or patio coating has to stay cool enough to walk on, grip when wet, and keep its color in strong UV.
Why standard epoxy is not an outdoor coating
The most common mistake we see outdoors is plain epoxy on a sunny patio. In HomeGuide's UV ratings epoxy lands at poor to fair, and outside it yellows, chalks and can turn slick. For outdoor work we use UV-stable materials: polyaspartic coatings, textured acrylic decorative overlays and cool-deck style finishes. Each has its place. A covered patio or outdoor kitchen can take a flake polyaspartic system. An open pool deck usually does better with a lighter, textured finish made for bare feet.
Keeping a pool deck cooler
Surface heat is the first complaint about pool decks here. According to HomeGuide, Kool Deck gives a non-slip surface and helps bring the surface temperature down, and light colors in general reflect more heat than dark ones. We steer pool deck clients toward lighter tones and textured finishes, and away from dark or glossy coatings that get hot fast. A textured knockdown or spray-texture finish also hides small cracks and adds grip around the water.
Cracks, soil and storm water
Patios and pool decks tend to crack more often than a garage slab, since they rest on soil that wets and dries with the weather. Wikipedia's page on Flash Flood Alley notes the region's shallow clay soils shed water instead of soaking it up, and San Antonio's wettest months on average are May, September and October. We look at how water drains off the patio or deck, check for raised or sunken sections, and repair cracks before coating. Moving cracks are treated differently from stable ones, and we tell you which is which. Coating cannot fix a slab that is still shifting, and we will say so.
Patios, porches and outdoor kitchens
Backyard covered patios, pergolas and outdoor kitchens are common in San Antonio homes, and many were poured as plain gray concrete. A patio coating turns that slab into a finished floor. Under a roof, flake polyaspartic gives a clean, stone-like look that wipes up after cooking. In open sun, a lighter textured overlay is more comfortable. Front porches, breezeways and walkways can be done to match. HomeGuide puts a 200 to 400 square foot patio in epoxy at $800 to $4,000.
Choosing between overlay, coating and sealing
Not every outdoor slab needs a full new surface. A deck in good shape with faded color may only need cleaning and sealing, which HomeGuide lists at $1 to $3 per square foot. A deck with surface wear, small cracks and stains is a candidate for a coating or Kool Deck finish, listed at $4 to $6 per square foot. A deck with more damage or a dated look may call for a decorative or stamped overlay, which costs more. We tell you which level your slab needs and why.
Planning around weather
Outdoor coatings are weather-sensitive. Rain on a fresh coat, a slab baking in afternoon sun or a cold front dropping temperatures overnight can each cause trouble. We schedule outdoor work around the forecast, often start early in summer, and keep the pool area clear until the coating has cured. The written estimate lists the system, prep, cure time and price, and that price is what you pay.
Looking after an outdoor surface
Outdoor coatings last longer with simple care. Rinse the deck or patio regularly to clear dust, leaves and pool chemicals. Use a mild cleaner, not harsh acids. Keep sprinklers from soaking one corner every day, and clean up after storms that wash soil onto the slab. Watch for new cracks after very wet or very dry spells, since clay soil moves with moisture. Small cracks caught early are cheap to fix. With that care, a well-chosen outdoor surface keeps its color and grip for years.
Matching the house and yard
Many San Antonio backyards mix limestone, brick and stucco with tan or gray concrete. Outdoor finishes come in light tans, grays, sandstone and earth tones that suit those materials and help with heat. Sample chips come with us, so you can hold them in full sun beside your walls and pool tile before choosing. Texture level is a choice too: a heavier knockdown gives more grip around the water, while a finer texture is easier to sweep on a covered patio where people walk in house shoes.

Patio & Pool Deck Resurfacing Questions
Does a resurfaced pool deck get too hot for bare feet?
Dark and glossy finishes get hot fast. Lighter, textured finishes such as cool-deck style coatings stay more comfortable, and HomeGuide notes Kool Deck helps lower surface temperature.
Can you resurface a cracked pool deck?
Usually, yes. Stable cracks are filled and covered by the new surface. Cracks that keep moving may come back, and we will tell you if a section needs repair first.
Is epoxy good for an outdoor patio?
Standard epoxy yellows in sun, which is why it never goes on as our outdoor finish coat. Covered patios do well with flake polyaspartic, and open decks with textured overlays.
When can we get back to swimming and using the deck?
It depends on the system and weather. Most outdoor coatings need a day or more before foot traffic and longer before furniture. We give you the times in the quote.
